The Importance of Purva Bhadrapada
Importance of Purva Bhadrapada
Purva Bhadrapada (20° Aquarius- 3°20' Pisces)
"The Old Soul Who's Caught Between Two Worlds"
Commencing the Soul's Awakening
In Vedic Astrology, the Zodiac signs are based on the position of the stars rather than the Seasons on Earth. This results in a 23-degree difference between the typical Western Tropical Zodiac and the Vedic Sidereal Zodiac. The Moon Sign is also seen as the Zodiac sign vs. the Sun in Western Tropical. While the Sun still holds great importance in representing the soul’s desire or the ego of an individual. The Moon is representing the true nature of a person and the way their mind works. The Ascendant represents the personality, physical body, appearance, and life foundation.
Anytime that the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant is placed in a Zodiac sign, it holds great importance. The Moon is always the most important. Then the Ascendant. Lastly, the Sun will also make an impact. Primarily, the behavior and appearance of a person are based on the Moon and Ascendant. While the Sun can show what a person feels inspired about, where they shine, and what career path that they feel drawn towards.
In Vedic Astrology, we also consider Fixed Stars. This is something that relates more to the Moon’s influence than the Sun. Since they can’t be seen from the Western Tropical view. However, this opens up the door to the 27 Nakshatras or Lunar Mansions. Each Zodiac Sign is distributed through 3 to 2.5 Nakshatras. This further distinguishes the Zodiac Signs into three different personality types. Therefore, even a person born under the same Zodiac Sign as someone else can behave differently.

Today, I want to bring up a very important Nakshatra for spiritual ascension. I think that it is a highly misunderstood placement.
Purva Bhadrapada is a Nakshatra that is positioned from 20° Aquarius to 3°20' Pisces. Its name means “the Former Lucky Feet". The Star Name is the Scorching Pair. Purva Bhadrapada is represented by the front legs of a funeral cot, a man with two faces, and a sword. The deity that rules Purva Bhadrapada is Aja Ekapada. It is also ruled by Jupiter. Along with Rahu and Saturn within the Aquarius section of this Nakshatra.
So, what does all of this mean? The meaning of the name refers to this being a lucky Nakshatra. It is, but it's also a Nakshatra that can sometimes come with sorrow and suffering. It isn't until the soul overcomes the sorrow that luck is found. So, transformation is one of the defining traits of Purva Bhadrapada. It is a Nakshatra that can (metaphorically) go through Hell and come back stronger.
Depiction of theScorching (Burning) Pair |
The Scorching Pair is referring to the duality of this Nakshatra. Scorching is referring to the intensity that is present within this Nakshatra. As Purva Bhadrapada is positioned between the last 2 Zodiac Signs, it represents the Ascension process or "the Dark Night of the Soul". Aquarius is the sign that breaks the ego, creating a detachment from the norms of human conditioning. Pisces is the sign that is fully liberated to flow with the Divine in harmony and oneness. So, here we see the process of internal death or suffering that takes the person through awakening. It is being engulfed in the burning fire to face the darkness that lies within. This duality is understood in the Awakening process. Because this is where the true nature of human beings, without constraint, is revealed. Through the wild and strikingly honest actions of Purva Bhadrapada.
Depiction of a Funeral Cot |
The front legs of a funeral cot represent the moment of death. This is the moment that the soul is caught between two worlds. Similarly, this Nakshatra exists between two worlds. Due to the severing of the ego, the soul is awakened to the truth (spirituality) but still remains in the illusion (the material world). For this reason, those born under this Nakshatra are sometimes called "the Gatekeepers" or "the Inbetweeners". This is also why those born under this Nakshatra are eccentric and rebellious. They are fighting against the constraints that keep humans conditioned and chained to the illusion.
Depiction of a Man With Two Faces |
A man with two faces also talks about another duality within this Nakshatra. Sometimes these individuals are not all that they appear to be at the surface. They are very mysterious and can have more than one side to their personality. Sometimes they behave ordinarily in one setting and behave eccentrically in a different setting. Most people born under Purva Bhadrapada have a professional life that requires them to be different from how they are in their personal life. Making their personality a complete mystery. These are the true wild cards, as you never know what to expect.
Depiction of a Sword SeveringTwo Realities |
The sword represents severing. Once again, the breaking away from the ego and societal norms. Along with splitting the personality into two. It also represents the intensity of separating a person from their deepest desires and darker nature. In Purva Bhadrapada, the person is liberated from their inhibitions. This is a test because of how advanced the soul is at this stage. The goal is to detach from material desires to the point of ascension. However, free will allows the person to give in to their desires instead. This is because of the detachment from constraints that happens when the soul is separated from the ego. Allowing the person to choose the wrong path of giving in to dark temptations without any limitations. Whereas, the true liberation that they seek comes through discipline. This lesson is repeated until the soul is finally ready to sever its attachment to the lower self. Also seen as the scorching agony that leads to luck and happiness.
Depiction of Aja Ekapada |
Aja Ekapada means "the one-footed unborn one". This deity is depicted as a fire-breathing serpent, a unicorn, or a monstrous goat. Aja Ekapada is known as one of the fierce forms of Lord Shiva. Also known as the god of fire, sacrificial altars, and occult studies. This is connected to the philosophical and mystical side of this Nakshatra. Purva Bhadrapada is usually drawn to research and mystical knowledge. Such as Astrology, Science, and Witchcraft. Also adding to the mysterious and eccentric side of Purva Bhadrapada. They are often seen as melancholic, pessimistic, elusive, and fascinated by dark subjects.
These mystical subjects help people to face their fears and to learn about themselves on a deeper level. Having a mystical understanding of life also tends to help Purva Bhadrapada to use their darkness to rise to greatness rather than allowing it to consume them. As the darkness found here can lead these individuals into trouble and have heavy karmic repercussions. Purva Bhadrapada questions the morals of society and burns out the impurities that only serve to uphold the illusion. Misfits and outcasts can be seen in this Nakshatra. Along with humanitarians, philosophers, mystical healers, scientists, and those who befriend the shunned and helpless members of society. As they are also peace-loving and selfless.
